Shohei Ohtani, a baseball player from Japan, creates history.

According to The Japan Times, Shohei Ohtani, a baseball player from Japan, made MLB history

by becoming the first player to qualify statistically as both a hitter and a pitcher in the same season.

He is one of roughly 130 players who will appear on the 2022 hitting leaderboard and one of 40 players who will appear on the pitching leaderboard.

He achieved the 162 innings necessary to be considered one of the top pitchers in the league on Wednesday

by pitching a spotless first inning in the Los Angeles Angels' final game of the season. He had already met the requirements to play as a hitter earlier in the season,

and MLB records show that his single in the first inning was his 662nd plate appearance overall.

Ohtani claimed, according to The Japan Times, "I wasn't fixated on it to begin with." "I figured if I got to play frequently I could qualify in both."

Ohtani admitted that he was disappointed that the Angels' season would finish sooner than he had hoped, but he added he was optimistic about the next year.
