Trey Lance will take the helm for the San Francisco 49ers in 2022.

Some, though, think Kyle Shanahan will eventually switch back to Jimmy Garoppolo. Include Sean Payton, a former NFL head coach, in that category.

Payton predicts that the 49ers will ultimately go back to Garoppolo. Perhaps he's right. Lance had a difficult start to the 2022 season.

In contrast, Garoppolo has led the 49ers to two NFC Championship games in the past three seasons. He is a skilled winner.

The 49ers had better be certain if they truly do dump Trey Lance and go back quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Barring an injury to Garoppolo, that would most likely be the end of Lance's chance.

Having said that, it's difficult to believe Kyle Shanahan has Lance on such a tight leash.

He made this choice, and now he wants it to succeed. Moving on from Lance is premature.
