2022 US Open: "Fearless" Caroline Garcia beats Coco Gauff to go to the semi-finals versus Jabeur
With a devastating 6-3 6-4 victory to go to the US Open semifinals, Caroline Garcia put an end
to any dreams that Coco Gauff would soon take up Serena Williams' mantle.
Gauff wanted to become the first American semi-finalist under the age of 20 since Serena in 1999 at the US Open.
Except for the few French supporters present, Gauff's first quarterfinal in New York lacked the excitement and intensity of that event.
In the second round, Gauff hit the fastest serve of the competition at 128 mph,
but her French opponent handled it with ease, breaking service five times in total to secure her spot in Thursday's semifinal matchup against Ons Jabeur.
They cheered in jubilation as Garcia won six matches in a row this summer against top-20 opponents.
Chrissie Evert, an American, declared herself "fearless" on the ESPN commentary box.
Evert achieved her home slam six times, just like Serena. Gauff will have to hold off on beginning his pursuit of them for another year.
