US Open 2022: Serena Williams loses in the third round.

Serena Williams, the icon lost in the third round of the US open, marking her final match as a professional tennis player.

Williams was defeated by Australian Ajla Tomljanovic on Friday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium in an exciting match, 7-5, 6-7 (7-4), and 6-1.

One of the best and most watched matches of the tournament, the three-hour contest featured a dramatic, 

protracted comeback that culminated in a tense tiebreak in the second set before Tomljanovic finally won the match in the third.

On her way off the court, Williams became tearful. In her on-court postmatch interview, she praised her parents and her sister, Venus, while crying "happy tears, I guess."

Williams was up 4-0 in the second set after losing the closely contested opening set and looked ready to force a third. However, Tomljanovic fought her way through 

to win four straight games to end the opening set and force a tiebreak. She came close to winning it as well, but Williams emerged victorious 7-4 to send the game into a third set.

After spending more than 2 1/2 hours on the court, Williams lost the following two sets fast after taking a break to go up 1-0 in the third set.

Williams didn't intend to conclude her career with this kind of defeat, but this is not how she wants to be remembered. Her career is too amazing and significant to let any one occasion define her.
